OLD AGE REALITIES: ISLAMIC PERSPECTIVES II

Bismillah Ar-Rahman Ar-Rahim

Our last episode introduced human sojourn across both metaphysical and material worlds. It took us across vital stages of development in life before imminent surrender to the final gate of eternity. This episode will avail us of ten main causes of benefit to individual and generality. Ten main things are hereunder listed for the benefit of humanity. They are:
1. Renewal of relationship with the Creator with seeking forgiveness over life expediency so far. Increase in extra worship (Nawafil) apart from the obligatory Salat. It also involves Charity, Sawm (fasting) and Qur'an recitation for either Du'a (prayer) or listening instead of absurd noise that fetch no spirituality.

2. Blessing the relatives with your sweated wealth. This should be done at their point of need unlike when the gift will serve no purpose in their life. A good instance is a case of a philanthropist whose relatives were seen asking for one favour or another from him but to no avail. Not quite distance from his death, he called his children abroad to share with them his properties but the children responded they were of no need to them and that he should rather give them to relatives. At long last, it was the Government of the state who confiscated most of the properties. The relatives earlier denied  were not at the instance either.

3. Volunteering with family and friends. Living among them at old age rekindle the spirit of re-union. Particularly, having causes to live in the rural area where there is bearable cosy of living unlike cities of expensive life is always better.

4. Reconnect with Masjid for full participation with people in religious duties and activities. Making your impact felt at this time reassure people of tapping from your bunches of experience and great pleasure in ploughing back to the community that built you.

5. Reach out to neighbours (far and near). For this is the period spent after the peak of life. The downward trend of the his conundrum should be able to balance up for the loopholes created earlier in life.

6. Sow profitably in Allah in expectations for the life hereafter. Allah (SWT) enjoins in Qur'an 58: 18 that: 'O ye who believe! fear Allah and let every soul look to what (provision) he has sent forth for the morrow. Yes, fear Allah: for Allah is well- acquainted with (all) that you do.' Furthermore, part of sowing profitably is looking ahead with gainful endeavour. The noble Messenger Muhammad (SAW) was reported having said: 'At the death of a man nothing benefits him further except only three things; revolving charity, knowledge of worth to others and good children who pray for him.' It must be mentioned that these can be contemporized further in modern exactitude.

7. Mending fence among children and relatives. This includes training, educating and mentoring children to be of help to each other in goodness. Whatever it cost a father/mother to set children of better way to success should be done in earnest. This ensures their self-reliance and independence. Placing value on some children than others in benefits is counter productive to unity if purpose anong children.

8. Leaving a level-playing ground before death knocks at the door is important. Children and relatives should not be made in any way to suffer for the ill committed by the parents. Whatever, grief, grudges and excuses should be defrozen before the death.

9. Treasure the will and guide towards its fair implementation. Writing will in Islam berates its form in the Western world. A third of the estate can be given out in charity to non-inheriting members of the society. This is the next proportion to be deducted after the cost of burial and debt incurred before devouring the properties. Nonetheless, trust within or outside should be inquired at point of burial for clearance. In fact, that is the essence of the Prophetic admonition that: 'A Muslim should not spend three days without having his will dully written.' This is to avoid possible interpolation among wealth.

10. Punctuate life by concretising resources to cause of optimum benefits not only for you as the owner but also others as well. Build structures like residence, business building and publish experiences for others to benefit from it.

These ten facts of life are composed together in the following lines:
جدد القرابة في الله واراف بهم    لطفا تجازب لك والمسا جد احياها

واقرض في الله واصلح مقاصدهم                        فبالارث توصي للاحسان احياها

It is on this note that human being is poised for goodness in all ramifications owing to the simple fact that whatever goes around comes around.
